What to pack for Iceland?

The weather in Iceland is unpredictable. It's often said that you can experience all four seasons in a single day. Here is a complete checklist so you don't forget anything in your suitcase, whether you're going in summer or winter.

1

Clothing for Winter (October - April)

Well equipped for winter!

Well equipped for winter!

  • Waterproof and Windproof Jacket: Essential. Choose Gore-Tex or similar.
  • Waterproof Pants: To wear over your regular pants or thermal leggings.
  • Down Jacket: A warm coat for cold days.
  • Thermal Underwear (Top and Bottom): Merino wool is best as it stays warm even when wet and doesn't retain odors.
  • Wool Sweaters or Fleece: Middle layer.
  • Warm Wool Socks: Bring several pairs.
  • Waterproof Hiking Boots: Essential for walking in snow and ice.
  • Beanie, Scarf/Neck Warmer, and Gloves: Waterproof gloves are recommended.
  • Swimsuit: For hot springs!
  • Flip-flops: Useful for pools and showers.
2

Clothing for Summer (May - September)

Summer can also be cool and rainy

Summer can also be cool and rainy

Even in summer, temperatures rarely exceed 15-20°C and wind/rain are frequent.

  • Waterproof and Windproof Jacket: Still essential.
  • Rain Pants: Very useful on windy/rainy days near waterfalls.
  • Light Down Jacket or Fleece: For cooler evenings.
  • T-shirts / Long Sleeve Shirts: Can be cotton or synthetic.
  • Comfortable Hiking Pants: Jeans are not recommended for hiking (drying time is too long).
  • Hiking Shoes or Trail Running Shoes: Waterproof is better.
  • Swimsuit and Towel: For hot springs.
  • Hat and Sunglasses: The sun can be strong, especially with the reflection on glaciers/water.
  • Sleep Mask: Essential if you have trouble sleeping with the midnight sun (although most accommodations have blackout curtains).
3

Accessories

  • Reusable Water Bottle: Tap water in Iceland is among the purest in the world. Don't buy plastic bottles!
  • Backpack (20-30L): For your day hikes.
  • Quick-drying Towel: Microfiber towels take up little space.
  • Headlamp: Essential in winter for hunting Northern Lights.
  • Crampons: If you plan to walk on ice or slippery surfaces in winter (simple models for city/light hiking).
4

Photography & Electronics

  • Camera + Lenses: Wide angle for landscapes/Northern Lights, Zoom for puffins/whales.
  • Tripod: Indispensable for long exposures (Northern Lights, waterfalls).
  • Extra Batteries: Cold discharges batteries faster.
  • Memory Cards: You will take a lot of photos!
  • Power Adapter: Iceland uses European plugs (Type C/F).
  • Power Bank: To charge your phone on the go.
  • Car Charger (USB/USB-C): Very practical for road trips.
  • Drone: Check regulations (forbidden in national parks and near birds).
5

Toiletries & First Aid

  • Sunscreen: UV rays can be strong.
  • Lip Balm: Wind dries lips out quickly.
  • Moisturizer: For dry skin.
  • Personal Medication: Prescription drugs, painkillers, motion sickness pills (for boats or buses), adhesive bandages (for blisters).

Shampoo and soap are often provided in accommodations, but conditioner is rarer (and useful after the Blue Lagoon!).

6

Documents

  • Passport / ID Card: Valid.
  • Driving License: Physical driving license is required for rental.
  • Credit Card: Accepted almost everywhere (even for toilets!). Make sure you have your PIN code.
  • Travel Insurance: Copy of your contract/emergency number.
